About Hannes Van Severen
Hannes Van Severen (born 1979, Ghent, Belgium) is a Belgian artist and designer known for his innovative approach at the intersection of art, design, and architecture. He is the son of Maarten Van Severen, one of Belgium's most influential designers, and the grandson of Dan Van Severen, a renowned minimalist painter. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the arts, Van Severen was naturally drawn to creative expression, developing a practice that blurs the boundaries between functionality and aesthetics. His work challenges conventional perceptions by transforming everyday objects, often furniture, into autonomous forms that shift the focus from function to aesthetic presence. While preserving a visual reference to their original purpose, his pieces invite viewers to reconsider their relationship with familiar objects.
Much like the Cubists and Surrealists, he deconstructs and rearranges reality, disrupting expectations and encouraging new ways of seeing. Together with his partner, Fien Muller, he co-founded Muller Van Severen in 2011, a design studio celebrated for its sculptural furniture that reimagines the relationship between objects, space, and materiality. Over the past 15 years, their work has gained international recognition, balancing simplicity and bold experimentation while maintaining a strong architectural presence. Influenced by his father's dedication to craftsmanship and purity of form, as well as his grandfather's minimalist sensibilities, Van Severen continues to push the boundaries of contemporary design. His work, along with Muller Van Severen's creations, is exhibited in leading galleries and museums worldwide.
