About Gilbert Swimberghe

Gilbert Swimberghe (1927–2015) was a Belgian abstract artist associated with the post-war avant-garde. His work is defined by a restrained geometric language, evolving from expressive compositions toward a refined use of color, ultimately centred around deep blue tones.

From the 1960s onwards, he developed minimal reliefs in wood and cardboard, where light and surface become essential elements. His work resonates with that of contemporaries such as Mark Verstockt and Guy Vandenbranden, reflecting a shared exploration of abstraction in Belgium.
