Gilbert Swimberghe, Geometric Abstract Composition 1997

Geometric abstract composition by Belgian artist Gilbert Swimberghe, Belgium, 1997, executed in oil on paper mounted on board. Since the 1950s, Swimberghe developed a highly recognisable abstract language built around recurring geometric forms, particularly triangles and squares, positioned between Belgian geometric abstraction and lyrical abstraction.

Layered diagonal brushstrokes partially veil the underlying composition, allowing earlier forms to remain visible beneath the deep blue surface. Signed and dated 1997. Preserved in overall good condition with minor surface marks consistent with age. A strong late work within post-war Belgian abstract art.

About Gilbert Swimberghe

Gilbert Swimberghe (1927–2015) was a Belgian abstract artist associated with the post-war avant-garde. His work is defined by a restrained geometric language, evolving from expressive compositions toward a refined use of color, ultimately centred around deep blue tones.

From the 1960s onwards, he developed minimal reliefs in wood and cardboard, where light and surface become essential elements. His work resonates with that of contemporaries such as Mark Verstockt and Guy Vandenbranden, reflecting a shared exploration of abstraction in Belgium.
