Henk Fillekes, Magneto Floor Lamp for Artiforte

Magneto floor lamp by Henk Fillekes for Artiforte, the Netherlands, 1954. Hand assembled in small numbers between 1954 and 1958, the Magneto belongs to the founding years of the Amsterdam atelier and remains one of the most mechanically inventive examples of Dutch post-war modernist lighting.

The lamp's defining element is a chromed steel ball housing a strong magnet, connecting the balance arm to the black lacquered tripod base and allowing shade and arm to rotate freely in any direction. This rare original 1950s example shows a natural patina on the chrome and shade, consistent with age. A rare piece of European collectible lighting in beautiful condition.

About Henk Fillekes

Hendrik (Henk) Fillekes (1918–1983) took over Lichtornamenten Atelier Artiforte in 1946 together with partner Johan van Wierst. Founded in Rotterdam in 1930, the atelier initially produced hand-assembled floor lamps with fabric shades.

Fillekes transformed it into one of the more inventive lighting ateliers, modernising the collection with metal and plexiglass constructions and bringing in designers, including Bauhaus architect Johan Niegeman and Kho Liang Ie.
