About Jozef Mees

Jozef Mees (1898–1987) was a Belgian painter whose work evolved from Flemish Expressionism towards a more abstract and structured visual language. From the 1950s onwards, his paintings became increasingly lyrical and layered, with a strong focus on color, texture, and light.

In his later work, he moved towards more controlled compositions, combining clear planes with precise line work, often contrasting bright colors against darker grounds. Mees was also closely involved in the Belgian art scene and was co-founder of the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in 1967.
