Pierre Caille, Sculpture 'Character with Pistons'

Sculptural earthenware work by Belgian artist Pierre Caille, an important figure in post-war Belgian ceramic art. Composed of assembled elements and finished with layered glazes, the work can be situated in the late 1970s, when Caille's palette shifted from deep black glazes toward anthracite surfaces, preceding his later silver and gold patinas.

The assembled form has a controlled, almost architectural structure, yet keeps the slightly playful quality that runs through Caille's figures and objects. Fired in an electric kiln at 1160 °C and signed on the underside. Rare representative Belgian ceramic sculpture from his late-1970s production, seldom available on the market.

About Pierre Caille

Pierre Caille (1911–1996) was a Belgian artist and a pioneer of ceramic sculpture, known for his distinctive "potter-painter" approach. Using pottery, glazed earthenware, enamel and stoneware, he created simplified figures inspired by different cultures, with a naïve and universal visual language.

Beyond his own practice, Caille played a key role in shaping ceramics in Belgium, notably through the development of the ceramics workshop at La Cambre. His work extends across multiple disciplines, yet remains rooted in a consistent exploration of form, material, and narrative.
