Willy Guhl, Eternit Patinated Loop Chair

Patinated Loop Chair designed by Swiss designer Willy Guhl for Eternit, Switzerland, 1950s. Developed from a single curved sheet of fibre cement, the chair became one of the clearest expressions of post-war European garden furniture.

The chair shows a heavily weathered surface with beautiful natural patina and traces of moss, consistent with decades of outdoor use. A small hairline crack is visible at the bottom, a known vulnerability in moulded fibre cement chairs, but the structure remains stable and unaffected. Presented in untouched condition, a strong example of European modernist garden furniture.

About Willy Guhl

Willy Guhl (1915–2004) was a Swiss designer known for his pioneering use of Eternit, a fibre cement material that allowed him to create lightweight and sculptural forms. Trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, he combined technical knowledge with a direct approach to material.

His designs, particularly for outdoor use, are defined by their simplicity, durability, and strong silhouette. Pieces such as the Loop Chair and his planters show how the material could be shaped into clear, functional forms.
