Maarten Van Severen, CN°II Plywood Chair by Top Mouton

Designed by Maarten Van Severen in 1992, the CN°II chair here forms part of a set of eight produced by the Belgian workshop Top Mouton for the Hampton Bays stand at the CPD trade fair in Düsseldorf, August 1997. Van Severen designed the entire stand, realised with his project partner before it took over his furniture production in 1999. The stand, a concrete floor, a wengé cabinet wall, an acrylic panel and an aluminium table, is recorded in his archives.

Seat and back are formed from a single sheet of birch plywood on an aluminium frame. Condition: good, with traces of use, spots and light scratches.

About Maarten Van Severen

Maarten Van Severen (1956–2005) was a Belgian designer and interior architect, known for his radical clarity of form and material. Working initially by hand, he developed furniture that balances archetypal simplicity with an exceptional level of precision.

His approach placed strong emphasis on the tactile and natural qualities of materials, often left untreated to reveal their origin and to evolve through use. Van Severen's work reflects a belief that objects gain meaning over time, shaped by the traces of everyday life.
