Maarten Van Severen, Prototype Bench BB97

Rare BB97 bench prototype by Belgian designer and interior architect Maarten Van Severen, created in his own studio in Ghent, Belgium, 1997. Unlike later editions, this early version features a fixed backrest and belongs to the period in which Van Severen still developed and produced his furniture largely by hand within his atelier practice.

The bench is made from latex-filled foam with a white coating that has naturally aged over time, resulting in visible cracks across the surface. Presented in original condition, structurally sound, and available with surface restoration upon request. A rare and important piece within Belgian collectible design.

About Maarten Van Severen

Maarten Van Severen (1956–2005) was a Belgian designer and interior architect, known for his radical clarity of form and material. Working initially by hand, he developed furniture that balances archetypal simplicity with an exceptional level of precision.

His approach placed strong emphasis on the tactile and natural qualities of materials, often left untreated to reveal their origin and to evolve through use. Van Severen's work reflects a belief that objects gain meaning over time, shaped by the traces of everyday life.
